This morning we were woken up with complimentary continental breakfast with a hard boiled egg, some breads, fruit, orange juice and coffee. We chose to see Ancient Rome today, since it looked relatively close to our hotel and started walking.
The walked for about ten minutes turned the corner and there it was. One of the Seven wonders of the world, just as it looks in all of the texts books I've had through the years, right in the mid
dle of everything. The Colosseum is pretty big...
We heard you could buy a 2 day pass that covers all of Ancient
Rome (Colosseum, The Roman Forum, Palatine Hill). We then decided to check the guide. It said to go to Palatine Hill to get the tickets because the line would be a lot shorter there... well we didn't know where that was either. During that journey we stumbled upon a church that I barely even noticed, the Basilica di Santa Francesca Romana. The outside was kind of dull. But we walked in, and I was astounded. Beautiful frescos all of the walls and the apse above the alter. Even the ceiling was full of colors and ornate, little details.searched around every where for tickets, walked around the
Colosseum twice,
After realizing we completely went the wrong way we
walked back down the hill, back to the Colosseum, past the Arch of Constantine, and towards Palatine hill only to find that it is closed. Most of Ancient Rome was closed down today so we decided we can just see it another time. We started walking towards the Vittorio Emanulele II monument. Which meant walking right back by the Arch of Constantine (I took some photos), past the Colosseum and up the Hill past the Church.
On the way we were able to see a few of the ruins
off to the side down the hill with tres and churches in the back it was a nice view. The monument was huge. There was police all around it because today the top five leaders are in rome (including Obama). We for some reason we decided to climb
the steps all the way to the top. We were
already tired from walking around the Colosseum with very poor aim. But Im glad we did. The view from the top was great. It amazes me how many churches you can see across the city. We rested some at top, went into a museum that was in the building, which was a pleasant break from the sun.
We continued to look around the monument a little longer. Saw the Trajan's column and then continued on to search for lunch. Found a little spot close to the Pantheon and ate there. Afterwards we went and looked at the Pantheon on which was probably my favorite site of the day. It was way bigger than I had imagined.
Afterwards we went to the Trevi Fountain which was really cool as well. Tossed the coin over the shoulder to ensure we come back to Rome. We passed by the spanish steps on the way to the metro and took it back to the Hotel.
Later that night we met up with two guys that Jamie saw on Couchsurfers, both were really into photography. It was fun to go around and look at the sights again lit up. I'll add a few more shots later.
